Grab your fishing rod and get ready for the free Kids’ Fishing Derby on Saturday, one of the most popular family activities offered by the Northbrook Park District.

The free event at picturesque Lake Shermerville at Wood Oaks Green Park, 1150 Sanders Road, typically attracts about 300 children ranging from little ones to teenagers.

The lake will be stocked with largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, bluegill, catfish and more, and young fishing enthusiasts can compete for prizes for the largest fish, smallest fish and most fish caught.

“The Kids’ Fishing Derby is a great opportunity for children and their families to connect with nature and spend quality time with each other,” said Northbrook Park District Recreation Supervisor Mary Mucci. “Fishing also teaches children patience and perseverance, which are valuable life skills.”

Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing rod. The park district will provide bait, and additional poles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be plenty of volunteers to help children and families find a spot and get set up comfortably.

No registration required. Fishing licenses are needed for participants 16 years old and up.

This free event is sponsored by Northbrook Bank & Trust Company, NA, A Wintrust Community Bank, as part of their annual partnership to provide community events and scholarship opportunities through a generous agreement with the Northbrook Park District.
